Honorary Member

The Blackburn and Darwen Brass Band will soon bid a heartfelt farewell to one of its most devoted members, Colin Harrison, who is retiring after decades of unparalleled service to the band. Colin has been an integral part of the band since the 1980s, serving in multiple roles, including contest secretary and librarian, making his mark as a steadfast and hardworking member.

Colin’s journey with the band began in the early 1980s, alongside his daughter Donna, who was also a member. Even after Donna left the band, Colin continued to serve, taking on the role of contest secretary. In this capacity, he managed the band’s participation in numerous competitions, often tasked with the unenviable job of drawing the contest numbers. Despite occasionally pulling the dreaded number 1, Colin’s dedication never wavered, and he continued to lead with grace and efficiency.

In addition to his role as contest secretary, Colin served as the band’s librarian for many years. This position required meticulous organization and a deep commitment to preserving the band’s musical repertoire. Colin, with the unwavering support of his wife Carole, took on this responsibility with passion. The couple’s living room was often filled with music pads, a testament to their dedication to the band.

Colin has witnessed the band’s evolution, including moves to several new band rooms, and has been a constant presence through these transitions. His loyalty and hard work have earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow band members, who describe him as not just a colleague but a dear friend.

As Colin steps down from his duties, the Blackburn and Darwen Band faces the challenge of filling the void left by his departure. Band members have expressed their gratitude for Colin’s years of service and their best wishes for his well-deserved retirement.

“Colin has been the backbone of this band for so many years,” said a fellow band member. “His tireless work behind the scenes, his friendship, and his dedication have made a lasting impact on all of us. He will be sorely missed.”

As Colin embarks on this new chapter of his life, the Blackburn and Darwen Band extends its deepest thanks for his contributions and wishes him a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.

The band gave Colin a heart-warming surprise at the annual awards evening when his daughter and son-in-law arrived to witness his special moment. He was honoured as an honorary member of the band and was also presented with a beautifully crafted photobook, capturing cherished memories from his time with the band.
